UNDP / Kenya - Development of a web-based platform to enhance technical capacity for farmers.

SDG 2 - Zero Hunger
SDG 8 - Decent Work And Economic Growth

Project Detail

Background

UNDP Kenya has implemented a project titled ‘Green Economy Youth Activation Programme (GrEYAP) to harness engagement of the youth in the green economy agenda. To enable the success of the project, UNDP realised the need to  provide an innovative solution towards digitised business development services opportunities for youth-led enterprises in the forestry and agroforestry value chains, particularly macadamia and cashew nuts by enhancing access to information, training modules and extension services.

Solution

Bewsys designed and developed a web-based platform through which associations and farmers in macadamia and cashew nuts can register and receive support. The main objective of the digital platform is to enhance technical capacity and provide pre-farm, on-farm and post-harvest support services for macadamia and cashew nuts value chain actors. The web-based platform delivers business development services, provides access to information and market, training, advisory and counselling services and report generation and management.

Impact

With the aid of the newly developed digital platform, farmers in Kenya are able to use data to make better decisions on and off the farm. The platform supports farmers’ key operations to ensure sustainable farming methods that optimise yield, increase their sales and maximise profits. The training content and resources made available on the platform helps the farmer community keep updated on agroforestry and farming best practices.

Working with Bewsys has been a tremendous journey. We have not reached our destination, but we are enjoying the ride. Although it was supposed to be a corporate function, at meetings, we built rapport and trust with the consultants, and at the same time, they enhanced efficiency and collaboration.

Very professional in their work and client communication. I was really impressed with their ability to meet all their deliverable schedules and, above all, submit a comprehensive user manual. I will recommend them to other projects.

UNDP Phillipines

Bewsys has been able to deliver what was expected based on the agreed timelines. The inception mission in the Philippines has been successful, and discussions with various stakeholders have been fruitful. Bewsys showed eagerness to know more about the unique requirements of the portal upon hearing it from firsthand users. They were able to accommodate various questions, comments, suggestions, and recommendations from different stakeholders, mainly from the government side, with each agency with unique requirements.

International Organisation for Migration (IOM)

Bewsys staff are results-oriented and adapted a lot of tasks, and were flexible to ensure the solution they provided was the best. A feather in their cap!

Association of African Universities

There is a great need for digital systems development in Africa. I think it will be essential to continue supporting institutions such as Bewsys so they can do these jobs better. Also, we need to think about solutions that can be deployed quickly to support other institutions where there is a match in need.
