Capacity building for environmental conservation of the Inle lake

UNDP / Myanmar - Web-based Inle Lake Management Authority (ILMA) knowledge management portal.

SDG 14 - Life Below Water

Project Detail

Background

The Inle Lake is a freshwater lake and lucrative tourist site in Myanmar, a country located in Southeast Asia. Environmental conservation is a practice that allows for the  protection of the environment and natural resources on individual and government levels.

In 2015, the Government of Myanmar launched the Inle Lake Conservation 5-Year Action Plan (2015-2020) to focus on biodiversity conservation, and support the active participation of local communities and key stakeholders in the development of the Inle Lake. However, there were limitations in coordinating the different stakeholders (i.e. government, non-governmental organisations, and local communities) to support the implementation of the conservation plan.

Solution

Bewsys developed a web-based knowledge management portal to provide transparency and efficiency in information sharing for stakeholder collaboration to implement the conservation plan. This website provided a platform for the public to access information on the Inle Lake region. The design process considered inclusivity by supporting two languages: English and Burmese and the easy management of the portal by users.

Impact

The website is helping to manage stakeholders in  promoting environmental conservation and the sustainable development of the lake. Additionally, data on the ecosystem of the lake aids in monitoring the progress of the 5-year conservation plan of the lake.  The Government of Myanmar can sustainably manage the Inle Lake while contributing to the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), specifically clean water and sanitation, climate action, life below water, and partnership for the goals.

Working with Bewsys has been a tremendous journey. We have not reached our destination, but we are enjoying the ride. Although it was supposed to be a corporate function, at meetings, we built rapport and trust with the consultants, and at the same time, they enhanced efficiency and collaboration.

Very professional in their work and client communication. I was really impressed with their ability to meet all their deliverable schedules and, above all, submit a comprehensive user manual. I will recommend them to other projects.

UNDP Phillipines

Bewsys has been able to deliver what was expected based on the agreed timelines. The inception mission in the Philippines has been successful, and discussions with various stakeholders have been fruitful. Bewsys showed eagerness to know more about the unique requirements of the portal upon hearing it from firsthand users. They were able to accommodate various questions, comments, suggestions, and recommendations from different stakeholders, mainly from the government side, with each agency with unique requirements.

International Organisation for Migration (IOM)

Bewsys staff are results-oriented and adapted a lot of tasks, and were flexible to ensure the solution they provided was the best. A feather in their cap!

Association of African Universities

There is a great need for digital systems development in Africa. I think it will be essential to continue supporting institutions such as Bewsys so they can do these jobs better. Also, we need to think about solutions that can be deployed quickly to support other institutions where there is a match in need.
